Your job is to supervise the campers, join in with whatever they are doing and make each day more fun than the one before!
When you arrive on camp, you'll be assigned to a group of campers and as a General Counsellor you will look after these campers throughout their entire stay. Be ready to take part in EVERYTHING that camp has to offer as you'll be moving from activity to activity with your kids throughout the day. You could find yourself shooting hoops at the Basketball court, then heading over to Arts & Crafts to create a masterpiece in Pottery before jumping in the lake...and that's just in the space of one afternoon! So a flexible 'have-a-go' attitude is essential!
If you've already got childcare experience, you're ideal to take on the role of a General Counsellor. You'll be taking constant care of kids throughout the summer which will involve everything from waking them up in the morning, joining in with their full day of activities and making sure they get to bed at night. You don't need to be an expert in any sport or activity for this role as you won't be expected to lead any sessions, however it's always useful if you have a general level of experience in a range of sports and activities as you'll be helping out in all areas at camp.
As a General Counsellor, you will never be working alone. You'll be part of a strong team of Counsellors and together you will have the responsibility of supervising your bunk of kids throughout the day, during meal times and in the evenings, whilst ensuring their safety and well-being at all times. As a group you will be committed to making sure the campers enjoy their summer at camp and make it an unforgettable experience for them!
Working as a General Counsellor is an incredibly rewarding role as you get to have a huge impact on the campers lives by forming strong connections with them and acting as a positive role model. To truly make the most of your experience, we encourage you to get involved with everything happening on camp from all the daily activities, to entertaining the campers (and other staff) round the a camp fire at night!

Sophie's Experience..."My time at camp was dedicated to the the youngest group of girls, known as the Freshman division, who were aged 7-8 years. Each day I would take them to daily electives and activities, such as Swimming, Arts & Crafts and Rock Climbing, which involved assisting the Activity Specialists whilst they led the coaching sessions. This was massivley enjoyable as I got the chance to try out everything on offer at camp so my days were filled with variety." |
As the world is currently faced with such unimaginable circumstances, it's important to remember this is not forever, and when things start returning to 'normal', summer camps will be needed more than ever before!
