Why did you apply to work at camp?

I went to the gym one day after a long day and got speaking to someone who had worked summer camps abroad in the past. I realised I was too ‘comfortable’ working in the UK every Summer and needed a challenge. I went on the Camp America website the same night and found the application process to be very simple. A few months later I was on a plane to JFK Airport and didn’t look back. It was the best decision ever.

A typical day at camp...

A typical day consists of waking up yourself and your campers around 7:15 and getting ready in time for flag raising and breakfast. We do a mix of activities throughout that could range from swimming, hiking, field games and much more.  You’re always on the move and constantly with your campers, even at meal times but it’s the best way to grow together.

Best part about working on camp...

The best thing about working at camp is being able to make such a difference to the young lives of individuals just through being by their side.

What Type of Camp Was Yours?

My camp was underserved, which meant that a lot of sponsors and donations were needed to run the camp. It was very rewarding because a lot of the campers just wouldn’t have the opportunity to grow like they do if they weren’t on camp. I was a bit unsure about what to expect but it turned out great. Our camp doesn’t have an amazing top of the range facility or building, but regardless we all learn to appreciate the small things because there is always someone who has less than you.

Favourite thing about America...

My favourite thing about America is that can be such a variety of places and cultures.

What will you take away from camp?

The biggest thing I will take away from camp is that no matter how tough the road gets, it really is worth putting in the time and effort to challenge yourself. There’s always going to be setbacks in life, even if you think that things are happy and smooth sailing, but taking on the challenges and seeing what good you can bring to the world is the key to succeeding. Showing a smile to someone else or a kind comment could just be all that they need to turn their life around for the better, even if you don’t realise it.
