What role did you do at camp?

I went to Raquette lake boys camp in upstate New York in the Adirondack mountains for one year in the 2025 summer! I was a general counsellor at my camp looking after 24 children between 3 other general counsellors.

Favourite summer camp memory?

My favourite memory of camp was celebrating the 4th of July with all the children and their parents. It was a great day as everyone was so relaxed and I got to meet the parents of my children which was super fun! Getting to embrace cultures that I wouldn’t typically was such a surreal experience and I was so grateful to be apart of it!

Where did you travel to after camp?

After camp, I didn’t have much time to travel before I went home to go back to work, but I had 24 hours in New York City and, along with a friend I met at camp who I’m still in frequent touch with, we managed to visit every landmark and have the most incredible day! We even finished the day watching the New York Yankees in a MLB game!!

What did summer camp teach you?

Camp was such a good experience for me as I’m a student teacher back in England, and getting hands on experience with children with a background and culture I’ve never experienced was incredibly beneficial for me as I can take what I’ve learned about how different children act under different circumstances, and I can apply that to my teaching degree. Even on the tough days in camp when I was starting to feel a bit homesick, camp allowed me to gain that courage to get on with my day and still be a smiling face around camp for both the children and my fellow staff.

A piece of advice...

If I could give one piece of advice for someone going to camp this summer, I’d say just be brave, take every opportunity you get and take time to cherish the moments you may not get to experience again.
