No Ordinary Summer

What is Camp America really like? Follow Phoebe's journey from nervous first-time participant to confident returner in this documentary exploring friendship, homesickness, personal growth, camp life, and the life-changing impact of spending a summer working at camp in America.

What Is Camp America Really Like?

Camp America means something different to everyone.

For Phoebe, it became a second home.

In this original documentary, we follow Phoebe's journey from first-time participant to returner, exploring how a summer camp in America helped her build confidence, make lifelong friendships, discover new opportunities, and find a version of herself she never knew existed.

Why Did Phoebe Choose Camp America?

Camp America had always been part of Phoebe's story.

Her mum had taken part in a similar programme years earlier, and growing up hearing those stories sparked a dream of experiencing America for herself. When the opportunity finally came, she decided to leave her comfort zone behind and spend a summer working with children at camp.

Like many participants, she was excited, nervous, and unsure what to expect.

Is It Normal to Feel Homesick at Camp?

Absolutely.

One of the most honest parts of Phoebe's story is her experience with homesickness. During her first summer, she struggled with being away from home and adjusting to life in a completely new environment. But with support from fellow staff and the camp community, she gradually settled in and found her place.

Looking back, she describes those difficult first few days as being completely worth it because of everything that came afterwards.

How Does Camp America Change You?

Throughout the documentary, Phoebe reflects on how camp helped her become more confident, independent, and comfortable being herself.

Away from home and surrounded by people from different backgrounds, she found the freedom to step outside her comfort zone, try new things, and grow as a person.

Many participants describe camp as a place where they discover a version of themselves they didn't know existed.

The Friendships That Last a Lifetime

One of the strongest themes throughout Phoebe's story is friendship.

Camp introduced her to people she would never have met otherwise, including friendships that quickly became some of the most important relationships in her life. Living, working, laughing, and overcoming challenges together created bonds that continued long after summer ended.

From camp friends in America to friendships spanning multiple countries, these connections became one of the most valuable parts of the entire experience.

Working with Children at Camp

As a counsellor, Phoebe discovered that camp is about much more than activities and schedules.

Every day offered opportunities to support children, help them build confidence, learn new skills, and create unforgettable memories. Whether it was helping campers settle in, encouraging them to try something new, or simply being there to listen, she realised how much of an impact camp staff can have on young people's lives.

The documentary also highlights something many participants experience: often the campers have just as much impact on the counsellors as the counsellors have on them.

What Is the Camp Bubble?

The documentary explores the famous "camp bubble" — the unique environment created when hundreds of people live, work, and grow together for the summer.

Away from everyday distractions, social pressures, and routines, participants often describe camp as a place where they can be completely themselves. It's an environment that encourages confidence, friendship, personal growth, and a sense of belonging.

What Do Participants Gain from Camp America?

Participants often leave camp with:

  • Greater confidence and independence
  • Lifelong friendships from around the world
  • Leadership and communication skills
  • Experience working with children
  • Increased resilience and adaptability
  • Travel opportunities across the USA
  • New cultural experiences
  • A stronger sense of self

Is Camp America Worth It?

For Phoebe, the answer is simple.

The experience gave her friendships, confidence, career opportunities, travel experiences, and memories she believes she wouldn't have found anywhere else. It also helped shape the direction of her life after camp, eventually leading her to a role working with Camp America itself.
