I decided to apply for Camp America, because I had always wanted to travel and see America! My role at camp was incredibly related to my career! Before I went to camp I had just finished my final year at Northampton College, where I was awarded Student Chef of the year! So I was really excited to put into practice what I had learnt at college, at camp. At camp I was the Cupcake Specialist, my role was to teach the children how to bake, pipe, handle fondant among other skills as well as deliver health and safety. Camp was an experience that I will never forget! I loved every second of it and I would do it all over again in a heartbeat! After camp I went to work for Raymond Blanc at his 2 Michelin Star restaurant, and from there I decided to start my own cake business, incorporating everything I learnt at camp.

The skills you will learn at camp are endless, you will be pushed out of your comfort zone, which will  help with your confidence and independence. I also learnt to be incredibly patient with the children and it was a very rewarding experience, watching the kids grow. It is great for your CV because it covers a range of skills that you don’t even realise you are learning and improving, like; team work, time management, social skills and many more!

The main things I have taken away from camp are; all the amazing people I met, you will make friends for life, and seeing all the smiles everyday - from the children to the staff, and just the overall experience! If you are thinking about doing Camp America definitely do it! I didn’t realise that camp would have so much of an impact on me and now my career. The memories you make will stay with you forever!
