The Maria Dalrymple Camp America Bursary

Are you someone who is committed to helping others in your community, or have you overcome challenges and think you could benefit from this programme? The Maria Dalrymple Bursary could be for you! This bursary will cover Camp America programme fees and US embassy fees, plus a $500 contribution towards after camp travels.

Maria Dalrymple

Maria Dalrymple served on Camp America’s Board of Advisors from 1993 to 2014 becoming a Special Independent Advisor. In these roles she sought to expand the reach of Camp America beyond the university campus and into under-served communities.

Professionally, Maria was a Senior Youth Worker and Director of Youth A.I.D, a local youth centre based in Lewisham, South London. Through the work of Youth A.I.D Maria had a clear purpose...to develop young people to their full potential. She believed everyone deserved opportunities and with her staff team at the centre, worked tirelessly achieving significant and positive changes in the lives of numerous young people across the borough.

Maria worked relentlessly fund-raising for her community projects. She was a remarkable person, generous with her time and attention, and a real friend to Camp America. She died following an illness in 2017, a tragic loss to her family, friends & community.

The Bursary

We have created this bursary to honour and remember Maria and to continue the work that was so important to her. She was active in promoting Caribbean & African culture and advocated passionately for diverse communities. We launch this bursary in Black History Month to recognise a hero in the history of Camp America and particularly encourage applicants from diverse backgrounds to apply for this bursary.

The recipient of the Maria Dalrymple Bursary, will receive financial backing to cover their Camp America programme fees and US embassy fee. In addition to the standard Camp America pocket money, which is paid at the end of camp, the recipient will also receive a further $500 contribution to support after camp travel.

To apply for this bursary, you will need to be nominated by a youth or social worker that you have previously participated in community projects with. The bursary will be awarded to someone who can demonstrate a commitment to helping others in their community, or to someone who has faced their own challenges and could benefit from this programme.
