When I first signed up for Camp America, I couldn’t have anticipated how much it would shape my future...

What started as a summer fling with America, turned into a full blown love affair, returning year after year.

I had heard about the mysterious Camp America through friends and cousins - the ones who disappeared for a summer and came back with tans, smiles and stories. I meant to take part several times over the years, but there was always something stopping me; Uni placements, work etc. After two years of working in a PR graduate job, I decided that it was time for me to see the world, so I applied, quit my job and headed off to the states.

The summer was amazing. Warning mega clichés ahead.

It truly was one of the best summers of my life. I met so many people from all over the world, that I am still friends with today. I made amazing connections with kids – who ended up teaching me more, than I reckon I did them, and I experienced things that I never would have back home.

It also started my travel bug. After camp I just kept travelling. I did a ski season in Canada, went back to camp, did another year in Canada, then went to Australia for 9 months and then again, back to camp. Before I knew it three years had flown by and I had accumulated a fair few passport stamps.

Camp shaped my future in a few ways; it gave me an opportunity to travel and experience another culture - starting my passion for travel, it changed my ambitions and my outlook, and it also helped shape my career. When I returned to camp my second year, I scored a gig as the social media coordinator and they continue to help me progress at camp, year after year. Having my job as the social media coordinator at camp has helped me pick up other freelance work as I have been travelling and it even helped me get my current job. (The best job in the world!) Working at Camp America HQ.

So maybe camp will shape your future and change your plans, or maybe you’ll go for one summer. Either way, you’ll have the best time of your life!
