Why should I take an American Red Cross course?
The American Red Cross qualifications are recognised and accepted throughout the 50 U.S. states as sufficient certification to work at a camp waterfront. You would therefore hold certification, and possess skills that are in high demand. For this reason, upon passing a course, Camp America will guarantee you a place in a summer camp, and your pocket money will be increased to reflect the demand of your qualification.
Do I need any qualifications to take one of these courses?
The answer is No. You do not need any previous lifeguard or swimming certifications to take an ARC course. You should simply be a strong swimmer, meet pre-swimming requirements and have a desire to improve your skills. However, it is certainly to your advantage if you do hold a qualification such as the Bronze Medallion, as this course teaches similar aspects of water safety and lifeguarding techniques.
Are the courses difficult?
The difficulty of the courses really depends on your skills as a swimmer and your ability to learn and retain information. Both courses are challenging and demand a lot of time and energy. They are held either over two weekends (6 days) or during holiday time (5 days), and there is a great deal of time spent in the pool as well as tests before and after the start of the course. Although these are demanding courses, approximately 95% of last year's applicants passed.
Each day before commencing the pool part of the courses participants will be expected to swim in order to warm up and prepare themselves for the session.
