Types of Camp

Camps have been going for hundreds of years in the US and are a real North American tradition. Each year millions of children aged 6 to 16 from all over the US (and beyond!) look forward to spending anywhere between 1 to 9 weeks at summer camp. It's their time to break loose - to enjoy themselves, have fun, make friends, try cool new things and get looked after by a lot of people with funny accents!! Life at camp is intense - it's hard work, and in a very short space of time camp becomes your world...and each world is different, because each camp is different.

Private/Independent

Private camps are the flagships of the great American summer camp tradition. Many have been around a long, long time and these camps are generally family owned and cater to children from high-income families - in short this is where the money is!! Because mum & dad are paying a lot to send their little darlings to camp, there's a lot for said darlings to enjoy - from the conventional activities like watersports, tennis, drama and baseball to the more unusual like skateboarding, climbing and even circus!

Outside of sports and arts, campers enjoy some very traditional camp activities - such as team building games, sleep outs, making s'mores around the campfire, and sing-a-longs, and the good news is - you get to do all of it too!

One such camp we work with is 'Echo', a traditional, coed (that's boys and girls to you and me), residential camp located about 90 minutes from New York City. It caters each summer for 350 campers, ages 7-15, and has 200 staff members.

The camp is situated in a beautiful natural environment, including a private lake and 200+ acres of fields and wooded trails. It's surroundings provide the perfect setting for trotting horses, rowing boats, hitting balls, riding bikes, discovering trails, painting canvases, roasting marshmallows (are you seeing a pattern emerging?), and making new best friends. All this just a convenient and comfortable distance from the greater New York City and Philadelphia areas.

"Because it's such a close knit community, you get to know every child and staff member throughout the summer, and get to share your experiences with some of the most amazing people, doing the most amazing things!" - Cheryl, UK

"I got voted best cabin leader during 3rd sesssion and got voted as 2nd best cabin leader of the summer by the rest of the staff. The best thing was that the girl who came first had been there for 13 years. I feel I achieved alot this summer and can see the skills I've learnt impactng my life already." - Oonagh, UK
