ARC Lifeguard Course

Camp America offers applicants in the UK the opportunity to take a course to become a qualified American Red Cross Lifeguard!

Why should I take an American Red Cross course?

The American Red Cross qualification is recognised and accepted through all 50 US States as sufficient certification to work at a camp waterfront.  You would therefore possess skills that are extremely high in demand, at summer camp!

Do I need any qualifications to take the course?

The answer is NO!  You do not need any previous lifeguard or swimming certifications to take an ARC course.  You should simply be a strong swimmer, meet pre-swimming requirements and have a desire to improve your skills.  However, it is certainly to you advantage if you do hold a qualification such as the Bronze Medallion, as the course teaches similar aspects of lifeguarding.

Is the course difficult?

The difficulty of the course really depends on your skills as a swimmer and your ability to learn and retain information.  The course is challenging and demands a degree of time and energy. The courses are held over two weekends (4.5 days total) and there is a good deal of time spent in the pool as well as in the classroom.  Although the courses are demanding, approximately 98% of last year's participants passed and were placed!

Check out what some of last year's participants thought about the course ...

"Simply put - it was a fantastic course.  I didn't expect to enjoy it nearly as much as I did. What made the course so great were the instructors" - James

"Great Course, great people and great banter. It was very friendly, welcoming and everyone felt included and encouraged.  I personally found it a very rewarding course" - Joanna

"It was informal so you didn't feel like you were back at school which I thought put a lot of people at ease.  The instructors were great and answered any question that we had and they didn't make you feel silly for asking" - Sheena
