FINALLY!

11:09 AM , 9-Jun-2010 .. 0 comments .. Link
After 11 months of waiting, 2 false hopes and endless checking of CAD, I've finally been placed. Officially and definitely! I am SO relieved! I've been hired by Kamp A-Kom-Plish, a mixed special needs camp in Maryland. I'm a little bit apprehensive, only because I've never worked with special needs kids before, but I'm sure I'll love it in the end! Gonna be a mad couple of days, I only found out last night and I start on the 12th!! Not sure when I'm flying yet but I do know it will be direct to Maryland, and getting picked up by the camp at the airport, which will be awesome! It's quite a turn around, considering a week ago I really didn't think I'd be going! So if there are any of you still waiting, you've got a while to be placed yet, even if it doesn't feel like it! Hope you all have an awesome summer, I'm gonna try and keep this up while I'm away, but something tells me I wont manage it haha Char x

9 Days...

Hey Guys, So I emailed CA last week to ask if there was anything I could do to help my application along or anything. When they replied they mentioned nothing helpful, only said that come 1st June they'd start issuing refunds if people weren't placed. This is only 9 days away!!!! I don't know if because I have guaranteed status there is anything legally binding saying I get to go to America...probably not. I doubt I'll get to go on RSG either so I'm starting to face reality and try and make some plans for the summer if I don't get placed. Maybe a miracle will happen in the next 9 days! Lets wait and see :) Hope all is going well for everyone else. Will update with a final decision eventually! Char x x x

A New Hope

So yes, I went for a geeky Star Wars related title, but its true! So after having been un-placed from Camp Vega a few months ago, I just sat around waiting to hear about another place. Went to the London RF but didn't get very far as most places were looking for really specific things. Anyway, I'd got to a state where I was starting to think it just wouldn't happen, UNTIL NOW!! Last week I was in the library when I got a phone call from the US Camp America office who said they had a camp leader on the phone who wanted to talk to me. So I had a really nice chat with the woman who said if I changed my availability date then we could go on and sign me up, so I was obviously stupidly excited!! So, I went home and changed my availability date etc. but since then I've heard nothing!! I really don't know whether to be excited that I have a promising offer, or worried that she didn't call me back! So confused! Ah well, I've got my Visa, ordered my Caxton card and bought a few things, so I should be ready to go whatever happens! Char x x x

Oh the rage!!!

Oh my word I am SO annoyed!! I was woken up this morning by a phone call from Camp America telling me that Camp Vega (the camp I thought I would be working for over the summer) has managed to over staff themselves, so many of us will have to be dropped. They were only authorised to take 12 people but instead signed up 24!! Although CA have told me that I will definately be garunteed a place at a camp somewhere, I'm so fustrated that Vega could make such a huge mistake! Now I have to go through the whole waiting, meeting people going to my camp etc all over again when I thought I was all sorted.

Will probably go down the London RF as I think I come across better face to face, quite a long way to go though so I hope it pays off!

Once again, I'm annoyed!

Sorry for ranting.

Yay! My CA direct page says I have garunteed status, nice to see it in writing at last!

Not a lot else going on really, just getting bits and bobs together now, paying everything (ouch!) and getting visa etc sorted.

My uni play is next weekend, how absurd! Feels like I've only been researsing a week!

Will report back with more interesting stuff soon! Char x x x

Crisis Averted!

Medical form crisis over! Spoke to numerous returners who said they didnt return their form for ages and all was good, which is pretty much what the woman on the phone at CA office said too!

Yay! x x x

Hi everyone! Hope everyone's getting excited about their places, they seem to be rolling in thick and fast! Becoming more and more glad I went to Edinburgh and snapped up a place! I don't think I could deal with watching everyone else!

So I'm having a small dilemia with my medical form, it says on the letter I got after being processed that any missing info (for me this is just my medical form) needs to be sent off within 10 days. This is not good as my bloody doctors wont give me an appt till thursday at the earliest!!! I've emailed CA officials and will give them a call tomorrow but I just don't want to stupidity of my clinic to jeopardise my lovely shiny place! Hopefully they'll be nice about it cos I've sorted everything else. Saying that, does anyone know if you have to send the actual CRB complete certificate off, or just an application for it?

Despite all this, I'm getting even more exited to go! I keep finding more people going to my camp, more pictures and videos of where I'll be staying and more places to add to the already endless list of places I want to visit!

Speaking of which, my brain actually can't contain the number of places I want to go to! If I have the money, I want to go corss country to California and the west coast. I'd love to go to Vegas!! Maybe I could get a job as a showgirl for a week to earn a bit more cash? The thing that I cant decide is a) how to get to wherever it is I want to visit and b) wether to bother going to some places like New York (where I've been before and is expensive!) and Vegas that probably need a fair amount of monies to really appreciate and enjoy. Also, I don't want to plan this epic trip, and then find that nobody from my camp wants to go any further than Boston! Part of me wants to plan ahead to save money and part of me wants to wing it! I DON'T KNOW!! My poor head doesn't usueally have to contend with this many thoughts at any one time.

Spoke to my dad earlier and he was getting all emotional about me going, "Its hard enough not seeing you for a few weeks while you're at uni, let alone 3 months!". Bless him, I'll miss everyone at home but its hard to think about that when you're the one who'll be off jetsetting and having the time of your life!

Finding it hard to believe that I have to get through a whole other semester of uni before I can enjoy all this properly! Exams are extra stressful this year because if I fail and have to resit, the resit dates are while I'm at camp! And I'm sure as hell not flying all the way back to the UK just to sit a stupid 90min exam!

Right, best get to bed, in order to pass said exams, I need to actually go to my lectures!

Good luck and congrats to everyone waiting or placed, will report back with more ramblings soon!

Over and out - Char x x x

The Recruiment Fairs...Duh Duh Daaaaaaaaahhhh!

3:06 PM , 27-Jan-2010 .. 0 comments .. Link

So it came to my attention that I didn't actually say much about the Recruitment Fair yesterday, due to my sheer excitement at getting placed!

Anyhow, I thought I might share a few words of advice for those of you yet to go!

1) Wear comfy shoes! You will be standing in a lot of ques. Also layers and plenty of water are a good idea, it gets hot, and you get really thirsty with the anmount of talking that you do! If you have someone to hold all your stuff while you're chatting to camps, mores the better! Oh, and maybe try to make a list of questions you have for specific camps, then you dont get confused what to ask who!

2) You can try and plan you're route round the booths, I did...but then it all went out the window when I saw the ques for some places, and the free spaces for others! Also, if there's a space at a table that isn't on your list, go talk to them! Camp Vega wasn't on my list of people to see, I went on a whim and now I'm off there in 5 months! Plus, if you get an offer from one camp, there's nothing to stop you going to look round a few other places before you make a decision, just make sure you let everyone know what your choice is if you get 2 offers.

3) They LOVE personality, I went to talk to one camp who said although I wasn't quite qualified for the position I wanted, I should talk to the head director because my personality was exactly what they wanted.

4) The que for Burgess and Hayward Camp will be MASSIVE! But, girls and boys have different ques, so dont be too put off if you see a huge line of the opposite sex waiting!

5) Finally, if you do get placed, leave a good half an hour for your processing as the line will no doubt be long and some peoples applications take longer than others to complete!

Have fun everyone! Hope this makes the process a little bit easier, and even more I hope you get placed! VEGA VEGA VEGA VEGA!!!!!

Hi Everyone!! So I've had my application sorted for a while but only just seemed to be able to get in here, so yay for me!

Had all my extended family, aunts, uncles, grandparents etc up for Christmas and was talking about CA today so I'm all excited again. I keep forgetting that I'm really going, can't wait to get placed.

Totally just realised I forgot to introduce myself, clearly I'm not that important :p My name's Charlotte, I'm 19 and originally from Sheffield, yay!! I'm at uni in Newcastle which is brilliant beyond brilliant, doing psychology which is less than brilliant but remotely interesting.

When I'm at home I live with my dad and sister, and every now and again my dad's girlfriend and her kittens stay over.

I like making a song and dance about everything, literally, I'm really into musicals :p

I think thats pretty much everything you'll need to know about me for now, so....over and out!
