I think it is possible, but it depends on when your visa starts and stuff, you'd probably have to discuss it with ca/your director so they can fly you out earlier but it shouldn't be a problem. Unless you can't travel after camp, I'd recommend it cause you never know, the American staff might be from everywhere where you want to travel so could stay with them, you could also meet others that wanna travel so you could share the costs of things :)

You don't get a six month visa, you can only enter the US a maximum of 30 days before your visa start date (which will be your start date at camp) and you have to leave by October 31st at the latest.

Yeh 5 months generally. I think it's Camp America's policy not to allow first timers to go out earlier than the start date given by the Camp Director. The only way to get out earlier is to say to your director you'd like to do some travelling before camp and if they could send an email to CA asking if yo could come out earlier.

I think the reason they don't allow you to go out early is because they want to make sure you get to camp on time and aren't stuck in Vegas somewhere. Or that you actually show up to camp and don't disappear.

If you want to stay there longer than your visa, you can apply for a b1/b2 visa which i did, it meant that I could be in america for up to 6 months before or after my J1 visa started/ended, I just couldnt work.

With one of these visas you can come into the country before your visa techinically starts, and after october 31st, as thats the latest we can be there. I got a 5 year b1/b2 visa, So I can basically come and go as a tourist as much as i like til 2015, as long as they don't think im trying to do the wrong thing.

I originally got it last year for travel after october 31th. But only ended up staying a week after that! haha

oh well now i have it for future!
