definitely take a bank card. or travellers checks although they are becoming a bit less convenient in the sense that a lot of shops wont simply accept a travelers check and you have to cash it somewhere first.

I see a lot of people are getting a "caxton card" which doesn't charge you for using it and gives you a good exchange rate.

I'll be taking my card and probably take out $200 everytime I need money so that I'm not taking out $20 here and $20 then the charges start to add up.

I don't recommend taking a lot of cash with you, you might loose it in the airport before you even get there and that would suck! You only need around $100 cash maximum for travelling to your camp, just in case you need to buy bus fares or food and things. Keep the rest somewhere safe.

Easy solution get a caxton fx card here: http://www.caxtonfxcard.com/ which is free :D BIG SMILES

Transfer some money on to the card from your debit card before you go to camp and then transfer more as you need it :D simples.

Yeah the minimum is $200 which is 136 pounds I think. What you can do however is change over that amount and take $100 back out at the cash machine.

For a couple of hours last week you couldn't top on the website as there was a problem, but its fixed now.

Ashleigh I'm taking $200 cash just to get me through the first week/fortnight. Than on my caxton card I have about $600. I'm going to take my debit card just in case, b/c you can't use the caxton card as a deposit when booking hostels. I get paid every fortnight at camp, so I'll have that money in an account as well.

US dollar card.
You have to pay a tenner for a deposit, but it just gets added to your balance. So the card is free.

Who said you can't use it for the deposit? I was using it all the time.

People on here and the website. You can use it but it creates a shadow. The website says it here:

'Q. Is there anything I should know about using my card?
» answer
Do not use your Caxton card for security deposits when you check into a hotel or hire a car. Secure these with any other credit or debit card and only use your Caxton card to settle the bill. This is because of something called ‘shadowed funds’. When a card is swiped for security you might not know that a ‘shadow’ is put on the funds on that card. Unlike a credit card your Caxton card holds a prepaid balance and the shadow will stop you from getting to your travel cash. A shadow can last for up to 30 days. Use any other card for the security swipe and your Caxton card when the payment transaction is required. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to call us.'
