Post Hurricane Irene - 1pm Update - 26/08/2011
As is being reported in the news, Hurricane Irene is currently en-route to the East Coast of the US. This hurricane is very strong and winds of up 115mph are expected. A number of States in the US are on high-alert including North Carolina, Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, New Jersey & New York.

Basic Hurricane Safety Actions:

Stay indoors and stay away from windows - now is not the time to be a tourist.
Stay away from low lying areas and coastal areas.
Monitor the local conditions - local news and radio will keep you up to date on what is happening in your area. http://www.weather.gov/nwr/. It is an excellent / official source for real-time weather information and warnings.
If you can get some cash it’s a good idea to do this (just in case loss of electricity – no ATMs) as well as a bit of water and some food supplies.
Heed the advice from local authorities. Evacuate if ordered.

Travel
A lot of road, rail and air travel is likely to be disrupted due to the hurricane - so please check ahead. Please prepare for delays and unexpected cancellations.

Flying Home this weekend:

We are monitoring this weather front very closely and whilst current tracking reports indicate it may affect the North East of the US at the end of the week the path and strength of this storm is erratic and could change at any time.

All Virgin and British Airways flights are operating – but this could change. Please keep up to date by checking your airline website before travelling to the airport.

Virgin Atlantic

Currently all our flights are operating as scheduled and passengers can check Flight Status (http://www.virgin-atlantic.com/en/gb/pa ... /index.jsp) for the latest information. In addition please update your mobile phone details in My Booking (https://www.virgin-atlantic.com/en/gb/m ... /index.jsp) in order for us to send text messages in the event of any significant disruption.

British Airways

As Hurricane Irene continues to move towards the east coast of the USA it may disrupt our services. You are advised to check the status of your flight before leaving for the airport.

Check the status of your flight here: http://www.britishairways.com/travel/gl ... public/en_

You can also check your flight status on your mobile phone by visiting ba2go.com.
If your flight has been cancelled, please do not travel to the airport.

Other Airlines

Contact information for other airlines can be found at: http://www.tollfreeairline.com

Booked onto a Camp America/Intrepid Trek:

Our trek providers, Intrepid are closely monitoring the hurricane situation – and currently all Treks are expected to depart as scheduled (tour managers are very experienced and trained in emergency situations – and our treks are very flexible – expect to be re-routed due to adverse weather). To check if your Trek is affected please call 1-800-SUNTREK (1-800-786-8735), toll free in the USA and Canada, or +1 707 523 1800 (office hours). For cases of genuine emergency or crisis, please contact +1 707 483 9460.
