I was at an underprivileged camp, therefore we couldn't afford to take the kids anywhere.

But i was with the second oldest group of boys -13 and 14 year olds- and we went camping up in the Wisconsin Mountains, canoed and swam in the Mississippi, star gazed, sunset hikes, seeing wild deer, eagles, making Mountain Mac and Cheese and just letting them see that being outside is cool too.

we did an over night 'backpacking' trip to a field about a mile-ish off camp where we pitched tents, cooked over the fire, etc. it was one of the best sleeps of the summer!

Yea, it was incredible :)

You see a real different side to the kids in an environment like that.

Plus, i had a blast too, it was a first for me.

A real privilege to be able to have done it 4 times over the summer.

Yea, it was only because i was a councellor to the older kids that i had the opportunity to go.

Even if you don't though and your travelling afterwards, try and do some outdoor stuff. We travelled for 3 and a half weeks and the random, natural, non-touristy stuff was way better.

Not sure how your camp works but we had to organise afternoon activities with our kids. Basically two one-hour blocks. If you had anything like that you could do mini-hikes, nature art etc.

id love to be out in the sticks when im travelling, but im guessing to do that ud need to hire a car (and i dont think im old enough). the way i see it is america is such a big place, so it might be impossible to do it without a car. in england you can be in the middle of nowhere and still be only a few hours from civilisation, whereas americas so big you could be hundreds of miles away (im guessing because iv never been), and there wouldnt be much public transport to these places. iv looked at a few campsites but they all seem to be trailer parks, and im not sure i want to end up at one of those!

can u reccommend any good campsites in either Texas or California that I could get to using public transport?

If you feel like hiring a car in NY you only need to be 18. Not entirely sure of the costs though.
