We road tripped it in a busted up Toyota. I'd highly recommend it. 'The American Dream'.

Your a girl (obviously), i'm not sure who'll you'll be with but public transport in some of the more remote places and even more so in the big cities is....interesting to say the least. We had a few dodgy moment and we were a group of guys. Half of which were American!

lol dont worry my boyfriends coming out to travel with me after, so should be fine (i hope lol)! wouldnt go travelling on my own, especially somewhere i dont know. iv heard the greyhound can be dodgy, but then so is Southampton lol. i think people are generally ok as long as they dont go looking for trouble, walk away and stuff like that. im pretty streetwise, not saying im invincible but i know when to keep my head down! thanks for the advice though

My camp was a wilderness adventure camp so ive had a few awesome trips. The best one was a 13 day hike on Isle Royale which is this island in lake superior, almost in canada. We did over 120 miles in the 13 days we were on the island. There were moose and wolves and these cool duck type things called loons which make a noise like a wolf howling. Me and my co were sitting on a rock next to a lake chatting and this huge moose crashed out of the woods like 20 meters away and went for a swim. It was amazing.

Ive also done an 8 day hike in the porcupine mountains in northern michigan, where i got to see a black bear whih is apparently really rare so i was really pleased. It rained for the whole first 6 days of that trip though. The kids handled it really well though. Its awesome being way out in the woods and having no one else to rely on but yourself and your co.

For me the best trip out was the one I was in charge of!!

It was a friday night trip which were always lots of fun with the whole camp and it was the final friday night. The directors organised for us all to go to a roller disco. It was a great night out and all the kids showed their skills off. Will never forget some of them doing the soldier boy dance on skates...

We went as councilors the week after as a last trip out as a group - sadly by then some cracks were appearing within the group so it wasn't so great but we still had a good time.

Another trip out which was good was when we took the juniors to a small adventure park. The weather wasn't great and we did one ride before there was torrential rain!! After half an hour of waiting in a gazebo we decided to go the cinema I knew the way to so after an hour and a half of driving and me NOT getting lost for once we arrived at the mall for the cinema. We went to see Wall*E (an amazing film) and it kinda went over the kids' heads but me and the other counelors loved it!! lol

Nothing major like.

Had a spot of bother in rural (and i mean RURAL) Wyoming, one of the guys with us was Indian and they obviously didn't get many Indians there.

Newark, 3am, the last bus, the 4 of us and a bus full of very dodgy people. Guy in front of us was openly waving a knife.

Then we were in Denver at the time of the Democratic National Convention and the Pooooooooliceeeeeeeeeeeeee gave us a brief interrogation for 'exhibiting terrorist behaviour' - what he means is we were being tourists and taking photos. Even though i had an 'Obama in the House' tee on.

That's off the top of my head, no big deals. Travelling alone shouldn't be something you should be afraid of though.

Like on drunken nights out in America, i never ever seen any sort of trouble compared to your average night in Belfast.

That's probably all irrelvant but if you need any more specific advice or whatever, just PM me.

But like anything, apply common sense and you'll have no trouble.

It's totally a case of common sense.

If possible, avoid getting the last bus, it's always full of nutters, in any country you go to.

Also, the americans are a lot stricter on being drunk in public than we are in Britain. The town I grew up in had open street brawls after about 9pm on the weekends....and that was EVERY weekend. (Moving back there in March, can't wait!)

I'm planning on doing some travelling on my own too, can't wait!

I did find the general American public to be alot more civilised and friendly than us Brits.

Yea, we vastly misjudged our time and ended up on the last one. Same goes for the underground in places like NYC.

Also, on that topic of things like the underground, if your not sure where your going (and you really need to be) then ask. It's very easy to get lost.
