Typical day at a private camp

Check out Sophie's typical day as a General Counsellor at a Private camp...

6.58- Counsellors drag themselves out of bed!!

7.00- Still in PJs, counsellors head to the kids rooms to knock crazily on their doors until they open up to show us they’re awake! The wakeup call that bellowed around camp is a big help too.

7.30- Its breakfast time! Fresh fruit, yoghurt, eggs and bacon all round.

8.30- Surfs up! Kids head to the beach for two hours of surf instruction- for those surfing pros, head outback to catch some big face waves.

12.00- Its Mexican day in the mess hall: Yummy Burritos, with a helping of nachos, salsa and sour cream.

12.30- Rest hour means kids get to roam around campus, hang out in the rec hall, play some basketball or chill in their bunks. Counsellors are stationed around camp to supervise, although it’s pretty chilled for everyone!

13.30- Meet on the lawn for activity time. Counsellors announce their activities, and get bombarded by excited kids.

13.45- Ice cream making! Kids can head to the mess hall to create their own chocolate ice c ream... all it takes is two zip lock bags, some ice, salt and milk!!!

14.45- Ring Hockey- Kids get the chance to test out camp’s very own hockey rink, playing a game of hockey with a twist: swap the puck for a plastic ring, and hockey sticks for straight poles!

16.00- Cabin time- A chance for counsellors to hang out with their cabin group. Counsellors arrange fun, chilled activities.

17.00- Dinner time- Another great meal! Lasagne, garlic bread, salad bar, and don’t forget the chocolate cake.

17.30- Free time- Take an evening dip in the ocean or have a quick surf. If kids have been good, counsellors may treat them with a trip to the local ice cream shop!

19.00- Let the games begin- All the kids get together for big games of ultimate Frisbee or footbee (think football with 4 goals and 3 different types of ball).

21.00- Time to wind down in the cabin, reflect on the day, play some music and prepare for bed.

22.00- Lights out... well, that’s what we think anyway! The frequent flashes of light tell us otherwise, but eventually the kids settle down for a good night’s sleep.

22.15- Staff meeting to discuss the day, then time for counsellors to unwind, chat, send a few emails and get a well deserved night’s rest.
