So this is what a typical day would be like at my camp – Southampton Fresh Air Home.
7.00 - Wake Up! We had to wake up early and be ready for duty to make sure we can get the kids up on time.
7.30 – Wake the kids up and get them ready for the day, brush their teeth and get them dressed.
8.25 – Flag Raising, Pledge of allegiance and announcements.
8:35 – Breakfast – Toasted bagels with cream cheese, cereal, hot chocolate. Mmmm!! Oh yeah, the kids eat too!
9.15 – Rest Hour/Bunk Clean Up – this is when the kids rest after breakfast and the counsellors have the chance to tidy the bunks.
10:00 – Frisbee Golf – a game pretty much like golf but with Frisbees, the kids have to get the Frisbees into nets and the number of turns are counted at the end to calculate the score – the lowest number wins!
11:15 – Downhill Bowling – exactly like bowling but downhill, being at a special needs camp we learned to make use of everything and anything we could get our hands on! The kids would role the ball down the hill to knock the pins down and if they got a strike then one poor counsellor would either get thrown into the pool or a have their face covered in chocolate pudding…yum!
12.30 – Lunch time! We all make our way to the dining hall for lunch time craziness. As well as food and drink you also find noise, noise and more noise! Lunch time is an activity in itself - full of bunk chants, announcements, shouting, banging tables and chairs – the only thing that was missing was a food fight!
1:30 - Rest time - the kids can stay in the bunk or just hang out, listen to music, play games, go to cooking club or just chill - there are 2 counsellors from each bunk to supervise while the others write emails/letters home, take a dip in the pool or just rest.
3:00 - Computing - kids get to play games, spice up their MySpace, e-mail home, play games or simply learn more about computers.
4:10 - Swimming - the kids love being in the pool and swimming is an everyday activity, it really helps to cool down after a hot, busy day – also great for building up an appetite.
5:10 – Shower time! The kids and counsellors shower and change for dinner and evening activities
18:25 - Flag lowering and announcements.
18:30 - Dinner - Good cooked dinner and more shouting, noise and bunk chants. On the menu today is hot pockets that some of the kids prepared during rest time, burgers, buns and fries!
19:30 - Rest Hour - kids and counsellors chill out on the back deck or around the stage ready for evening activity.
20:30 – Let the activities begin! There is a different activity everyday ranging from Counsellor talent show, camper talent show, magic show, karaoke or just get up on stage and look silly! Each bunk gets awarded points and at the end of the night there are prizes to be won – you should’ve been there to see the look on the older boys’ faces when the younger girls won the 50inch TV and PS2 for a week!
21:45 – Bed time! After an eventful evening activity the kids brush their teeth, change clothes and get ready for bed – clearly they don’t go to sleep straight away because the chef walks in with cookies and milk – What! More sugar at bed time?!
22:30 – Shower and freshen up. We’re finally done for the day and this is now our personal time. Some of us like to hang out, watch a DVD, play pool or just relax and then head for bed for a good night’s rest.
