The American Red Cross qualifications are recognised and accepted throughout the 50 U.S. states as sufficient certification to work at a camp waterfront. You would therefore hold certification, and possess skills that are in high demand.
The answer is No. You do not need any previous lifeguard or swimming certifications to take an ARC course. You should simply be a strong swimmer, meet pre-swimming requirements and have a desire to improve your skills. However, it is certainly to your advantage if you do hold a qualification such as the Bronze Medallion, as this course teaches similar aspects of lifeguarding techniques.
The difficulty of the courses really depends on your skills as a swimmer and your ability to learn and retain information. The course is challenging and demands a lot of time and energy. They are held either over two weekends (6 days) or during holiday time (5 days), and there is a great deal of time spent in the pool as well as tests before and after the start of the course. Although these are demanding courses, approximately 95% of last year's applicants passed.
Each day before commencing the pool part of the courses participants will be expected to swim in order to warm up and prepare themselves for the session.
