Private/Independent
Private camps are the flagships of the great American summer camp tradition. Many have been around a long, long time (in some cases over 100 years!) and these camps are generally family owned and cater to children from high-income families. In short this is where the money is! Because Mum and Dad are paying a lot to send their little darlings to camp, there's a lot for said darlings to enjoy - from the conventional activities like watersports, tennis, drama and baseball to the more unusual like skateboarding, climbing and even circus!
Outside of sports and arts, campers enjoy some very traditional camp activities - such as team building games, sleep outs, making s'mores around the campfire, and sing-a-longs, and the good news is you get to do all of it too!
A great example of a traditional private camp we work with is Camp Lincoln for Boys and Camp Lake Hubert for Girls – a brother and sister camp combination set on a fresh water lake at the heart of Minnesota’s Brainerd Lakes Area. CL-CLH has been there for over 100 years, with separate camps for boys and girls and now hires 200 staff members over the two camps each summer to watch over, teach and entertain the 1,000 campers which pass through each camp over the course of the summer!
The camps are situated in a beautiful natural environment, with log cabins hidden amongst woodland on the shore of a lovely, clear lake. It's surroundings provide the perfect setting for trotting horses, riding bikes, rowing boats, hitting balls, discovering trails, playing music, roasting marshmallows (are you seeing a pattern emerging?), and making new best friends. Get to know small town America on your days off and make the trip to the Mall of America – the biggest mall in the country!
